Short answer: for most Canadian hikers, a two-way messenger on the Iridium network is the best all-round choice: Garmin inReach Messenger or inReach Mini 3 if you want a self-contained device, ZOLEO if you want the lowest device cost and are happy to use your phone as the keyboard. If you only want an SOS button with no subscription, get a personal locator beacon (PLB). Phone satellite features are a useful backup, but coverage limits (especially in the north) mean they don't fully replace a dedicated device yet.
> Satellite tech changes fast. Models and features below were checked on the date at the top of this page; subscription prices change often, so we don't list them.
Key takeaways
- Coverage first. Iridium covers all of Canada, including the Arctic. Phone services and Globalstar devices have gaps.
- Two-way messaging lets rescuers ask questions and lets you cancel a false alarm.
- Subscriptions are the real cost. Check whether a plan can be paused in the off-season.
- Cold kills batteries. Keep the device inside your jacket and carry a small power bank.
- Practise at home: send a test message and know how to trigger (and cancel) SOS.
Four types of device

| Globalstar messenger | SPOT Gen4 (one-way), SPOT X (two-way) | Yes | SPOT X only | Required | Gaps in the far north |
| Personal locator beacon (PLB) | ACR ResQLink and similar 406 MHz beacons | Yes | No | None (register the beacon) | Whole country |
| Phone satellite features | iPhone Emergency SOS & Messages via satellite; Rogers Satellite on supported phones | Yes (limited) | Yes (limited) | Varies | Limited; e.g. Rogers covers south of 58°N |
The shortlist
| Device | Why pick it | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin inReach Messenger | Small, very long battery life, works alone or with the phone app | Tiny screen; typing easiest via phone |
| Garmin inReach Messenger Plus | Adds photo and voice messages over satellite | Costs more; photo/voice use more credits |
| Garmin inReach Mini 3 | Colour touchscreen, navigation features, rugged | Pricier than the Messenger; base model is text-only |
| Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus | Photos, voice notes, long messages | Top price tier |
| ZOLEO | Low device cost; app keeps a dedicated number and switches between satellite, cell and Wi-Fi | No screen; you need your phone to write messages |
| SPOT Gen4 | Cheap, simple tracker with SOS and preset check-ins | One-way only; Globalstar coverage gaps |
| PLB | No subscription; alerts the international search-and-rescue system | No messaging, no confirmation that help is coming |

What to compare
Coverage
Iridium satellites cover the whole planet, including the Arctic. Garmin inReach, ZOLEO and ACR Bivy use Iridium. Globalstar (SPOT, Apple's iPhone features) has less coverage at high latitudes. For trips in the Yukon, NWT, Nunavut or northern BC, choose Iridium or a PLB.
SOS workflow
Know who answers your SOS (most messengers route to a 24/7 international response centre), how long the button takes to activate, and how to cancel a false alarm. Two-way devices let responders ask what happened, which helps them send the right help.
Battery and cold
Canadian shoulder seasons are cold. Lithium batteries lose capacity below freezing. Keep the device in an inside pocket at night, turn down tracking intervals on long trips, and carry a small power bank and cable.
Subscription fit
Most messengers need a plan. Look for monthly plans you can suspend in winter if you only hike in summer. A PLB has no subscription but also no messaging.
Weight and carry
Clip it to a shoulder strap, not inside the pack. A device you cannot reach after a fall is not an emergency device.
Phones with satellite features
- iPhone 14 and later: Emergency SOS via satellite works in Canada, and Messages via satellite is available in Canada with iOS 18 or later (Apple Support).
- Rogers Satellite: text messaging and texts to 911 on supported Apple, Google Pixel and Samsung phones where you can see the sky, south of the 58th parallel (excluding some regions). Non-Rogers customers can add a standalone plan (Rogers FAQ).
These are excellent backups, but phones have short batteries, fragile screens, and more limited coverage. On remote or northern trips, bring a dedicated device.
When a communicator earns its place
- Solo hikes and trail runs
- Any route without cell coverage
- Shoulder-season and winter trips
- Multi-day backpacking and canoe trips
- Routes where a bear encounter, injury or weather change could force a reroute
A communicator doesn't prevent bear encounters. It shortens the time to help when something goes wrong, which in bear country is often an injury, not a bear.
Before every trip
- Charge the device and power bank.
- Send a test message from home.
- Leave a trip plan with someone (route, return time, when to call for help).
- Check recent bear reports and closures for your route on BearSee.
