Can You Bring Bear Spray on a Plane in Canada?
No. Bear spray is banned from carry-on and checked bags on Canadian flights. How to buy or rent it at your destination and dispose of it before you fly home.

No. Bear spray is not allowed in carry-on or checked baggage on flights in Canada. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) says so directly, and Transport Canada lists animal repellent sprays among items you cannot bring on a plane.
If you are flying to Banff, Jasper, Whistler or another bear-country destination, plan to buy or rent bear spray after you land and get rid of it before you fly home. Here's how.
Key takeaways
- Carry-on: no. Checked bag: no. This applies to all commercial flights in Canada.
- Bear bangers and flares: treat them as not allowed. Buy them at your destination.
- Buy after landing in the arrival city, or rent in Banff or Canmore.
- Before you fly home: return, hand off, or take it to hazardous waste. Never bin it.
- Bush planes and float planes may have their own procedures. Ask the operator.

Why bear spray isn't allowed on planes
Bear spray is a pressurized can of capsaicin-based irritant. A leak in the cabin or hold could incapacitate passengers and crew. Transport Canada groups animal repellent sprays with mace, pepper spray and tear gas in its list of prohibited items. U.S. rules are similar, so the same plan applies if you are flying in from the United States.
What to do instead
1. Rent it at your destination
For short trips in the Rockies, renting is usually simplest. Services in Banff and Canmore rent bear spray by the day, and you return the can when you leave (RentBearSpray.ca, Rent A Backpack Canmore). You pay full price if you use or damage it.
2. Buy it after landing
Stop at an outdoor or big-box retailer in the city you fly into (Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna) or in a mountain town on the way. Bring photo ID; most stores check it. See Where to buy bear spray in Canada for what to expect at the counter.
3. Get the size right
For a trip of a few days of day hiking, a 225–230 g can is enough. See Best bear spray in Canada.
Before your flight home
Do not try to sneak leftover bear spray into your checked bag. Options, in order of preference:
- Return it, if rented.
- Give it away to a friend or fellow hiker who is staying in the area.
- Drop it at a household hazardous waste facility. Even "empty" cans hold pressurized propellant, so they do not belong in recycling or garbage (Recycle BC). Some municipalities run seasonal collection events; ask the local town office.
- Ask an outfitter or campground whether they accept unused cans.
Driving instead of flying?
- Keep the safety clip on and store the can in the trunk or a sealed container, not loose in a hot cabin. Parks Canada advises avoiding heat and puncture risks (Parks Canada: bear spray). Hard travel containers designed for bear spray are available.
- Crossing the Canada–U.S. border? Declare bear spray. Canada regulates it as an animal deterrent (a pest control product), so the can must be clearly labelled for use on animals. Rules change; check with the Canada Border Services Agency before you go.
Remote trips on small aircraft
Float planes and bush planes that serve remote lakes, parks and lodges sometimes transport bear spray under special procedures, often outside the passenger cabin. These arrangements depend entirely on the operator. Ask your operator when you book, and never assume the rules for commercial airlines apply either way.
