Short answer:

  • Day hikes in southern Canada, with a recent phone? Phone satellite features are a reasonable backup.
  • Remote, multi-day, winter or northern trips? Get a dedicated Iridium messenger.
  • Between the two? ZOLEO if you want the cheapest device and don't mind typing on your phone; Garmin inReach if you want a device that works on its own if your phone dies.

Key takeaways

  • inReach and ZOLEO both use Iridium, which covers all of Canada, including the Arctic.
  • Phone satellite features have coverage limits, e.g. Rogers Satellite covers south of the 58th parallel.
  • Battery is the biggest practical difference. Dedicated messengers last days to weeks; phones last hours of active use.
  • Two-way SOS with a response centre is still stronger on dedicated devices.

Garmin inReach: the self-contained option

Choose it if: you want a device that works even if your phone is dead, wet or broken, or you want navigation and tracking on the device.

  • inReach Messenger is the value pick: small, very long battery life.
  • Messenger Plus and Mini 3 Plus add photo and voice messages over satellite.
  • Mini 3 adds a colour touchscreen and navigation features.

ZOLEO: the budget two-way messenger

Choose it if: you want Iridium coverage at a lower device cost and you always carry your phone. The ZOLEO app gives you a dedicated number and email and routes messages over cell or Wi-Fi when available, satellite when not. The device has SOS and check-in buttons but no screen, so writing messages needs your phone.

Your phone: the backup you already own

iPhone 14 or later can contact emergency services by satellite in Canada, and Messages via satellite works in Canada with iOS 18 or later. Rogers Satellite adds texting and 911 texting on supported iPhone, Pixel and Samsung phones, including for customers of other carriers via a standalone plan.

Limits to plan around:

  • Battery: cold and GPS drain phones fast. Carry a power bank.
  • Coverage: not all of Canada, especially the far north.
  • Durability: a cracked phone after a fall is a bad emergency device.
  • Sky view: deep valleys and heavy forest slow or block connections.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an inReach if I have an iPhone with satellite SOS? For southern day hikes, the phone is a reasonable backup. For remote, northern or multi-day trips, bring a dedicated messenger.

Is ZOLEO or inReach better? Both use Iridium. ZOLEO is cheaper but needs your phone to type; inReach works on its own.

Does Rogers Satellite replace an inReach? Not fully. It covers south of 58°N and depends on your phone's battery.
